RBT Competency Assessment
What you need to do before your competency assessment:

Meet the BACBs eligibility requirements:

18 + years of age

High school diploma or equivalent

Pass a background check

Set up an account with the BACB. You will then receive your BACB number which will go on all your paper work, 40-hour training, competency assessment. You will also use this portal to apply for the exam.

Complete a 40-hour training which meet the BACB standards. You will receive a certificate on completion and will need to provide this to the BCBA completing your competency assessment.

Read the RBT hand book and the RBT Initial Competency assessment packet. Ensure you are confident with tasks 1-20 which is what your competency assessment will be going through.

Three tasks (6-15) on the assessment will need to be demonstrated with a client. You will need to provide a video for your assessment. If you are not able to get another person to complete this section, please contact us to let us know. You must have consent from the person. The video must be clear and visible for the BCBA to ensure the person in the video, is you and they can clearly see you demonstrating the skill. The videos will need to be sent to Adapt Behaviour 24hours before your assessment.
Your assessment

The competency assessment will be completed online via video conferencing.

You will need to be in a quiet environment and only you in the room.

The assessment will be a mixture of interview questions, role play and demonstrating the skill (for more information check out https://www.adaptbehaviour.co.uk/post/what-to-expect-from-your-rbt-competency-assessment

As the assessment will be online you will need to ensure your internet connection is suitable for video conferencing.

The assessment is typically 3 hours long but your BCBA will use their discretion on how much time you need, this may be shorter or longer.

Access to excel to create a graph (or you can draw a graph) – detailed information will be given to you in your exam
After your assessment

You will be informed at the end of your assessment if you have passed or failed

You will receive verbal feedback at the end of your assessment

If you pass you will receive your signed competency assessment within 24 hours

If you fail the assessment, you will be given detailed feedback where you can have the opportunity to ask questions. If you re-apply within 15 days you will get a 50% discount off your next competency assessment.

Preparing for the exam

You will need to submit your 40-hour certificate, and competency assessment form via the BACB account.

You will need to have a BCBA who has agreed to provide ongoing formal supervision once qualified as an RBT. Ideally this should be someone who works in the same place as you. If this is not possible you can have remote supervision from a BCBA but you will need various contracts in place from your employer, clients, and other relevant individuals.
